INFORMATION
History of Pi Psi Fraternity, Inc.
PI PSI Fraternity Inc. exists as a national, collegiate-based fraternity,
designed to act as a vehicle for social improvement, through the cultivation
of positive young men. Our origins lie on the campus of Michigan State
University. The fraternal colors are Burgundy and Gold. PI PSI strives
to uphold the vision of the founders by emphasizing academic and professional
excellence within its membership body. Outside of these general requirements,
PI PSI celebrates the diversity that defines its existence. While rooted
in the historical traditions of Black Greek associations, PI PSI welcomes
interest from men of all ethnic groups.
The foundational principles of PI PSI include: Brotherhood, Leadership,
Academics, Community Service, and Honor. These principles are the ideological
lifeline of the fraternity, and influence all aspects of fraternal activity.
The membership draws strength from a united deference to the principles.
PI PSI actively recruits collegiate, and post-collegiate men that can
offer innovative, effective ways of promoting the fraternity. Interested
individuals should be firmly committed to improving the communities and
families to which they belong. PI PSI provides an atmosphere of support
in achieving these ends, however, personal initiative is essential. As
an organization PI PSI is in its infancy, making leadership qualities
an equally important characteristic to have. Over the years our membership
criteria has resulted in a collective of focused young men, intent upon
producing social change through the silent foundations of service. Using
college campuses as centers of activity, PI PSI offers informational,
professional, and social events for the benefit of the community at large.
PI PSI emphasizes achieving quality membership, opposed to rapid expansion.
Our members graduate into professional job opportunities, graduate programs,
and solid family units, creating a network of remarkable men. The fraternal
commitment to the betterment of society, however, is lifelong and unfailing.
It all began on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing,
Michigan. Five remarkable young men sought out a place of belonging within
the campus organizations located there. They wanted to be apart of an
organization that was committed to uplifting the community, that had an
honorable sense of responsibility, and a unique social outlet available
when the stress of school life burdened them. Most importantly, they wanted
to be a part of an organization that was headed for the new millennium;
this organization would have the ideologies that would make a difference
in the community in the upcoming years. After doing a thorough investigation
of campus organizations, those being Greek and non-Greek alike, they did
not find the organization that would make the statement they were searching
for.
Something happened on November 22, 1993. For on this day Pi
Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded by five young men:
The Most Respected Steven Bradley Boyd, The Most Respected Kaunda Amin
Gray, The Most Respected Brian LaVelle Curley, The Most Respected Bennie
Clayborne Jackson, and The Most Respected Jermaine DeShawn Davis. With
Pi Psi being formed in a time when student organizations often disappear,
the fraternity's possibility for success was a major concern. After hours
of planning, research, and long hours, Pi Psi fell into an organizational
limbo. The founders reached a difficult point in the structuring of the
young organization. Issues arose such as what would be the focus of the
organization, how would the founders' visions develop, and what individuals
to select to assure a successful future. During this time the founders
went through the legalities of starting an officially recognized organization,
such as petitioning for the University's recognition and registering the
organization with the state of Michigan. With a newly founded organization
fresh in their minds, the desire to succeed in their hearts, and a burning
ambition in their eyes, things were bound to happen for Pi Psi. The founders
ran into several roadblocks while striving to grow, but for the "fearless
five" nothing was impossible. The key to making this organization
grow was through strong membership.
Something else important happened on Friday, April 28, 1995. For on this
day, the founders crossed their first line, aptly named Tical. This line
brought four new members into the organization. The members of this line
were: Robert Boyd, Eugene Gatewood, Idris Vance, and Criag Robinson. Pi
Psi was also incorporated on April 28th. Thus, the name became Pi Psi
Fraternity, Incorporated.
Because of a strong commitment, and our professional motives, for Brotherhood,
Leadership, Academics, Community Service, and Honor to the Frat, Pi Psi
has continually advanced in our purpose to promote the well-being of our
members, therefore presenting prosperity to all who seek the generosity
of this organization. Today and forever more, we will continue to present
ourselves like the Greek Phoenix of long ago: No matter how difficult
the challenge, how deep the endeavor, the Professional Men of Pi Psi Fraternity,
Incorporated will continually recognize the needs of the society, putting
ourselves through the fire for a solution thereof.
On today, something is happening....look around....
